There are many fabulous stories about my 4th of July weekend that I will share, but there is one not so fabulous story that I want to share too. It's only being published first because it doesn't require any pictures to go with it. There is a bit of a story to lead up to the point though.
Every time I go to Idaho Falls, ID I check to see if my favorite boutique is going on. It is called the Mini Bazaar and I have decorated a great deal of my home with items from it. Most recently, I've started to crave sugar cookies that someone makes and sells there. The packaging is on a simple white paper plate with a clear baggy over it. Plain and simple. Keep in mind, I don't actually like sugar cookies usually. These sugar cookies are delightful though. Almond extract in the frosting and possibly the cookies themselves. On our way to my family reunion I wanted to stop by the Bazaar (as we affectionately call it). I knew they would be closed by the time I got back. With my mom, Josh and Mason waiting in the car, I ran inside for the cookies. I was in there about 5 minutes total. When I came out, I heard a baby crying in the parking lot. I realized that the crying was in the back of my mind from when I went in as well. That's at least 5 min. of a baby crying. There was a guy with 2 kids sitting near the entrance to the Bazaar and I asked him if the crying baby belonged to him. He said "No, but it's been crying for over 5 min." This is when my heart begins to race. I ran to the car that I could hear the cry from and witnessed a baby, less than 1 yr. old, crying in the backseat. The windows were down about 2 inches and the car was turned off. THERE WAS NO ONE AROUND! I talked to the baby for just a second to let her know she was okay just in case she could understand. I went inside and got the owner of the Bazaar. With her by my side I alerted everyone within earshot that I was calling the police on a white Toyota 4-Runner with a baby locked in the car. I went back outside to tell my family what was going on and the mother (I assumed) finally came to the car. I told her that I was calling the police and she rolled her eyes at me! I'm trying not to judge this person, but she was trying my patience. Another person soon followed after the mother and looked at me with the same uninterested gaze. That means that 2 adults agreed to leave this baby ALONE in a locked, hot car to SHOP at a boutique. THERE IS NOTHING THAT CAN JUSTIFY THIS! I was sick. Absolutely beside myself. I did call the police with the car info. and license plate number. I'm not sure what, if anything, was done after that. I knew that the baby was taken out of the car by the lady. She may have gone back into the boutique or just left. All I knew was that the cops were on her tail and I hope they give her some sort of citation for her negligence. We have had 3 babies die in Utah this summer already from being locked in hot cars. (I'm getting all flustered even writing about this incident.) I know it's sometimes inconvenient to take your baby/children everywhere with you, especially when they are fast asleep, but please, please let their protection and safety be what guides you. There is nothing more precious than our children. How dare this mother be so irresponsible.
